Mulled Wine or Hot Christmas Wine for Cocktail Friday

Updated: Jun 19, 2020

It’s that time of year! It's cold and the perfect drink is a German Christmas tradition 🇩🇪. This holiday cocktail not only smells great but will knock your Barfly wings off if you have to much! It was first brought up to me by a friend that traveled to Germany around Christmas time and said, "It's was the most Christmas feeling place I have ever been, with all the lights, decorations and let’s not forget the drinks". But there was one thing that filled the air, he said it smelled like Christmas itself, kinda like walking in your grandmas house around Christmas. The smell is actually a drink called Mulled Wine or Hot Spiced Christmas Wine. So get ready for the long recipe. This drink is guaranteed to get you warm for the winter Barflies 😉 Don't forget to sign up for our email list

  • 2 oranges (navels oranges are the best)

  • 2 (750 milliliter) bottles red wine

  • 1 (750 milliliter) bottle white wine

  • 1 (3 inch) piece of fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced

  • 3 cinnamon sticks

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

  • 1/3 cup brown sugar, or to taste1/4 cup

  • brandy (optional)(... but do it)

  1. Use a sharp knife or a vegetable peeler to remove the zest from the oranges in strips, being careful to remove only the orange part, leaving the pith (white flesh) behind. Then, juice the oranges into a large, heavy-bottomed pot.

  2. Pour the red wine and white wine into the pot with the orange juice. Place the strips of orange zest, ginger, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and brown sugar into the pot with the wine mixture; stir to dissolve the sugar.

  3. Cover and heat over medium-high until heated through, but not boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low and heat for an hour or longer to bring all of the flavors together. Adjust the sweetness by adding more brown sugar, as necessary. Strain into your mugs and serve hot with a splash of brandy, if desired. (But do it)

There you have it! One of my favorite holiday drinks! If you're not into the cooking and want the easy way out, got to your local total wine and they should have a pre - made ones, just follow the instructions on the back. Just keep in mind... its not going to be as good.

Have a great Friday night Barflies!
